I Loved the Mothman
Well, I didn’t at First.
by Cari Dubiel
Before I wrote I Loved the Mothman and Other Stories, I thought cryptids were strange and maybe a little dumb. I had colleagues at my library who were obsessed. One of the staff members even brought a speaker to present on cryptids as a library program. I didn’t get the appeal.
Then I visited the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. I had no idea that there was so much folklore about the Mothman. I read all the articles the museum has preserved, including side tales that explained more about the creature’s origin and how it interacted with the history of the town. I started to understand more about cryptids–you don’t necessarily have to believe in them to be interested. They’re a new version of mythology.
I’ve always loved mythology. As a child, I was obsessed with Greek and Roman gods, and I’ve recently learned more about those of other cultures. My Mothman idea quickly multiplied into a bevy of short stories. Some are about individual cryptids, and others contain more than one. My initial story, “I Loved the Mothman,” was published in Passageways: Mythos (2023), but I have learned so much more since then.
Now that I’ve written this collection, I’ve come up with even more ideas for contemporary mythology. While I’m currently writing a book for my agent, I’m hoping to release more short stories in this vein!
